When I started researching the Middle Ages for a novel, I discovered that medieval coins are readily available at affordable prices. I was intrigued by the idea of holding in my hand something that someone 1000 years ago—give or take a few centuries—had held in theirs. I tracked down a local coin dealer who specializes in medieval coins and purchased a silver denier struck in the name of Richard the Lionheart. I was thrilled. I was also immediately addicted.
Four years later my collection includes more than 200 coins**, including the denier of the Frankish king Charlemagne (c. 742-814) shown in the photo. From each one I've learned something new and intimate about medieval history, and by collecting them I've made close friendships with people with similar interests, all over the world.
If you're a coin collector or a medieval history buff, I'm eager to hear from you. Ours is a small but fascinating world.
